Figures may be out of date. Figures are collected from public data sources and held for a short time so pages load quickly. Seat counts, party labels, votes and the progress of bills can all lag behind the official record, and a seat won in a by-election or a member changing party may not show up straight away. Always confirm against the official source before relying on a figure.
“Participation” is not attendance. Nobody publishes an attendance record for the House of Commons or any provincial legislature. Our participation figure counts the votes where each member’s choice was written down and published (a recorded division), and shows how many of those a member took part in while holding their seat this session. A member who was paired with an opponent, sitting on a committee, travelling on parliamentary business or on approved leave looks exactly the same as one who simply did not turn up. The census “participation rate” on riding pages is an unrelated statistic about local residents in work. Full methodology.
Census caveats. Riding figures come from the 2021 Census of Population (income figures are for 2020), published for today’s 343 ridings. Statistics Canada deliberately nudges small counts up or down so no individual can be identified, and withholds some values entirely, so small figures are approximate and some are missing. Provincial and municipal pages are a directory of who represents you and nothing more: no province, territory or municipality publishes votes, attendance or bills in a form a program can read, so those panels are federal-only.
